Evie's first first day of school.
Evie began pre-Kindergarten the second week of September. It has been a big change for all of us. Most notably, I feel like, for the first time in five years, I am beginning to return to being a semi-coherent person rather than something resembling the living dead. Evie LOVES school, though. And I love that she Evie & Evie's Momhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15158181215713305483noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5286243510773925002.post-31505299755664832412014-08-20T15:20:00.002-04:002014-08-20T15:20:53.900-04:00Road Trip Home

That first one is a monarch caterpillar. The second one is a painted lady.
I brought both inside the house and placed each one in its own jar, with food of course, so Evie could watch them form their chrysalises and eventually emerge as butterflies.
The painted lady emerged as a butterfly on Friday afternoon Evie & Evie's Momhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15158181215713305483noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5286243510773925002.post-233456973719736332014-07-06T00:12:00.003-04:002014-07-06T00:12:32.274-04:00StillwaterA couple of days after the St. Croix River crested (in the last week of June) we drove over to the town of Stillwater to go take a look.
And we have some new blooms in the yard.

On the morning of Thursday, June 19th, we received about 4" of rain here in the Twin Cities. It broke a record for the most amount of rain recorded in one day. And June 2014 became one of the wettest Junes on record. Minnehaha Creek, a small creek which runs through parts of Minneapolis, immediately flooded. Rivers like the Mississippi and St. Croix took a little longer to crest. In fact, they Evie & Evie's Momhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15158181215713305483noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5286243510773925002.post-87289003555302013382014-06-14T19:57:00.001-04:002014-06-14T19:57:30.162-04:00Maplewood Nature Center HikeI took Evie for a short hike a few days ago. She insisted on packing a bag and bringing it with her. She carried it most of the way. Besides some water, she brought along her camera and a couple of stuffed animals.
After getting home from our hike, we hung around the yard for a bit, checking out what was in bloom.

Well, over the past week it has been warm. Today, I'm sitting here freezing as I type because it's something like 55 degrees outside at 2:30 in the afternoon.
That is nearly 30 degrees colder than it was yesterday at this time.
Not only have we been enjoying some of the nice weather at the pool, but we've been taking advantage Evie & Evie's Momhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15158181215713305483noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5286243510773925002.post-54762522825873515162014-06-02T20:55:00.000-04:002014-06-02T20:55:18.962-04:00Memorial Day WeekendWe kept our Memorial Day weekend pretty relaxed, mostly spending our time appreciating the nice weather and our garden.
We did clean out a portion of the yard on Saturday. It was a section off to the side of our deck that the previous owner used as a chicken run. It was all dirt, with this incredibly ugly cage left behind that we nicknamed the naughty child cage. Evie is obsessed with bugs, so I picked up the caterpillar, and placed it in a jar with a few different types of leaves. I noticed that the caterpillar preferred daisy leaves. So, I dug up a small daisy plant and put it in some dirt in the bottom of the jar. After a couple of days, the caterpillar had sealedEvie & Evie's Momhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15158181215713305483noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5286243510773925002.post-8933561020898326992014-05-22T22:13:00.001-04:002014-05-22T22:13:10.149-04:00Como Park Zoo and ConservatoryNow that we live pretty close to Como Park Zoo, you'll probably be seeing more and more photos of this place. I don't get tired of visiting there, and neither does Evie.
I went on Tuesday this week thinking it wouldn't be too busy, being a weekday and all. Except, apparently every school in the area had nothing else they could do with their students on this particular day, so they schleppedEvie & Evie's Momhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15158181215713305483noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5286243510773925002.post-8268951374399334912014-05-19T13:56:00.000-04:002014-05-19T14:02:29.215-04:00Arbor Day EventThis past weekend, a nearby recreation center hosted an Arbor Day event. Jon volunteered at a table, handing out tree seedlings and answering any questions someone might have about trees. Unfortunately, there were fewer people who attended the event than anticipated. However, Evie had fun, and she took advantage of the smaller crowd. Nearby the information tables were a couple of climbing Evie & Evie's Momhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15158181215713305483noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5286243510773925002.post-87055217038232564122014-05-14T12:00:00.000-04:002014-05-14T12:00:38.247-04:00Minnesota Landscape ArboretumOver Mother's Day weekend the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum held a plant sale. We decided to go check it out, and we came home with five new plants for the gardens. The previous owner of our home removed the grass from a section between the sidewalk and boulevard, but did not have a chance to plant anything there before selling the house. We covered the area with wood chips last year, but this Evie & Evie's Momhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15158181215713305483noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5286243510773925002.post-10102531717129510822014-05-07T20:48:00.000-04:002014-05-07T20:48:06.179-04:00Can I Put My Winter Coat Away?My winter coat is still hanging by my back door. I think it is safe now to put it away. It seems if you put your winter gear away too quickly here in Minnesota, it only invites the spring weather to turn nasty and snow. But flowers have started blooming in my yard, a magnolia in a nearby public garden is in bloom, and there are hints of green on the trees.
I don't know about anyone else, but it Evie & Evie's Momhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15158181215713305483noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5286243510773925002.post-19488909922903603112014-05-06T20:55:00.003-04:002014-05-06T20:55:30.729-04:00Planting SeedsIt's warm enough to start planting a few things. Evie was pretty excited to help.
While digging up dirt and moving some rocks, Evie and I found some pill bugs.
And our first flower is blooming in the yard... finally!

It was breezy and chilly yesterday, but today was cold, cold, cold. It rained most of the day, and although temperatures hovered in the low 40s, it felt more like the low 30s. As long as it doesn't snow, I won't complain ... too loudly. Still, by the end of April, I would appreciate at least warmer rains.
But, yesterday we wereEvie & Evie's Momhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15158181215713305483noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5286243510773925002.post-47366943504644770152014-04-26T21:31:00.002-04:002014-04-26T21:31:59.422-04:00In Between April ShowersWell, the 10-day forecast shows nine days of rain ahead. Boo. I hope they're wrong. It's going to be a cold rain, too. (The forecast shows a lot of days with highs only in the 40s. Brrr.) I have seeds to plant, yard work to do, and flowers that I'm waiting on to bloom. I don't have time for spring to act like it's mid-March.
In the meantime, we've had a few days here and there with mild, Evie & Evie's Momhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15158181215713305483noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5286243510773925002.post-81223597410782470622014-04-21T21:05:00.000-04:002014-04-21T21:05:23.469-04:00Easter Weekend - SundayDid anyone else in the Twin Cities area notice how gorgeous Easter morning was? It was warm and foggy, and the sky was so pretty.
Evie woke us up at 6-something, announcing, "The Easter Bunny came last night! The Easter Bunny came last night!" He left eggs in Evie's room and down the hallway, and he left a candy trail down the stairs.
At the bottom of the stairs, in the living room, Evie & Evie's Momhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15158181215713305483noreply@blogger.com0
